Doug Chiang is an artist, designer, and director who studied at UCLA. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan 1962. He emigrated to the U.S. and lived in Michigan 1968. He started as a Stop Motion animator on the Pee Wee’s Playhouse television series. He then became a visual artists for films such as Ghost, The Doors, Terminator 2, Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, and The Mask. He is also known for his Star Wars art in which I will be talking about.

Mandalorian Salute — Star Wars Art by Doug Chiang

This piece of art is a concept art for the popular Star Wars series The Mandalorian. He uses many lines straight and curved. The colors that he uses are light colors that aren’t bright. Colors such as grey, blue, white, and a salmon type of color for the sun set. The texture he gives on Mando’s armor gives it a realistic look to the metal armor. Also the shades of the sky making it appear that the sun is setting.

In the painting it’s about Mando just looking out the window of his ship looking at a other Mandalorian who has a jetpack. The Mandalorian also helped Mando escaped from getting killed by a group of bounty hunters so he was appreciating the help from him and the other Mandalorians. Doug grew up watching the Original Trilogy of Star Wars, he always wanted to do art for franchises like Star Wars. I’m pretty sure he was excited to work on this piece because it’s Star Wars related and it’s an artwork for a successful series. Doug obviously had fun while making this and wanted to show the love he has for the films.

I’m a huge Star Wars fan so I was excited to learn about who was one of the artists behind the The Mandalorian. The concept art that he has for the show is really good and is brought to life on the screen. Whatever he imagines can be used to the real life film. I hope to have fun with work when I get my degree and get work with in my field. The more you love what you do, the less you have to work. It seems that Doug loves what he does because he’s living his dream.
